Step 2, Clean and Remove the Chalk
Wash the siding with a cleaner made to cut chalk, such as a phosphate-free TSP substitute mixed per the label. Work a soft-bristle brush over the surface by hand to lift the powder, then rinse thoroughly from top to bottom.
The goal is a clean, chalk-free surface, not just a wet one. Rushing this step is the number one reason a careful repaint still fails.
A Warning About Pressure Washing Aluminum
It is tempting to blast heavy chalk off with a pressure washer, but be careful on aluminum. Too much pressure held too close can dent the siding and drive water up behind it.
On aluminum and older siding, a gentle wash combined with hand-scrubbing is safer and just as effective. Let the brush do the work, not raw pressure.

Chalky Aluminum Siding (Oxidation)
Aluminum chalks through oxidation as the factory finish ages, and it is the classic chalky-siding case we see. Clean it gently, hand-scrub the powder, and rinse well.
Prime any bare metal with a primer made for aluminum, then recoat. Skip the high-pressure washing, since aluminum dents more easily than most people expect.
Faded or Chalky Vinyl Siding

Here is the honest part. You can do all of this prep perfectly and still be back on a ladder in a few years, because chalking comes back.
As the next coat of paint ages, its binder breaks down and starts shedding pigment too. On heavily oxidized siding, the surface keeps working against adhesion. For a lot of homeowners, repainting chalky siding becomes a chore that repeats every few years.
Encapsulating the Surface with a High-Build Bonding Coating
There is a different way to handle it. Instead of a thin coat that sits on the surface, a high-build ceramic elastomeric coating bonds into properly cleaned siding and locks it down.
